No need! Once you’ve registered online or over the phone and paid for your spot in class, you’re all set -- just give us your name when you arrive. If you’ve purchased a class registration as a gift and would like us to send a gift notice, just let us know by contacting us at info (at) thecheeseschool (dot) com, 415.346.7530, or making a note of your request with your online purchase.
Class registrations (and payment) must be made in advance. Otherwise we won’t know how much cheese to buy!
If you are unable to attend a class for which you have registered, class registration fees are non-refundable, but are transferable (your friend will be sooo happy). Alternatively, if you cancel your registration, we are happy to issue you a school credit that may be applied to a future registration, for up to one year, provided cancellation notice is given 48 hours prior to the beginning of the original class. If your party is four or more people, we require 72 hours notice of a cancellation. If you purchased class for a friend, the same policies apply. As we are a teeny tiny business with very limited seating, we are not able to make exceptions to this policy.
Platters orders maybe cancelled with 48 hours notice. Cancellations with less than 48 hours notice will be charged 100% of the purchase price less any delivery fees.
If you choose to purchase a spot in another class, you simply need to copy and paste the code into the "gift certificate or code" box during checkout on our website. If for some reason the code is not working just give us a call 415-346-7530 or email us, info (at) thecheeseschool.com and let us know. We’ll let you know if there is a price difference. You will not be considered registered until your class is fully paid. Please note that we do not allow multiple cancellations and re-registrations with the same school credit -- you may only redeem a school credit once.
Almost never. If in the unlikely event that we must cancel a class, you will receive a lengthy apology and have the option of receiving a refund or applying any fees paid to a future class.
Certainly! Please let us know the names of folks in your party when you register. We limit group registration to 10 people in a public tasting class or 8 in a public cheesemaking class. If you have more than 10 in your party please check out our private class offerings. If you have registered four people or more, we require 72 hours notice of a cancellation. There is no discount for group registrations.
It depends on how hungry you are, and how you feel about eating cheese for dinner. We serve seven to nine cheeses in class along with sliced baguette, fresh and dried fruit and two glasses of wine. Keep in mind that class is a guided tasting, so we will ask you to slowly and intentionally eat your way around your plate of cheese. If delayed cheese gratification sounds like torture, or you are generally a big eater, we recommend enjoying a salad or soup at our lovely cafe ahead of class. Regardless, almost everyone leaves class fully satiated.
Our maximum capacity is 28 people for a tasting class (20 for a cheesemaking class). It feels intimate but it’s a big enough group to generate great questions.
Not at all! Cheese 101 is a great place to start, but by no means the only place. All of our classes are designed to be informative, fun, and delicious.
We love kids. We even have some of our own. Our classes are generally geared towards adults though. If your child is over 16, she or he is welcome in class, but let us know beforehand. No discount is given for children or other guests not drinking alcohol. From time to time we offer kid-focused classes. Subscribe to our newsletter for updates to our schedule.
Here is a link to the FDA’s recommendations for pregnant women. In most classes at least some raw milk cheeses are served, but the majority of them are aged, hard cheeses. All cheeses are marked as raw or pasteurized. If you have further concerns, give us a call, 415.346.7530.
Yes! We have gluten-free crackers available upon request. Please let us know when you register for class.
As tastings are planned in advance for a group setting we do not offer substitutions. If you have cheese preferences or dietary restrictions and would like some guidance in selecting a class, just give us a call, 415.346.7530. We’re happy to guide you towards a class that works for you. We can substitute bread with gluten-free crackers upon request.
One cannot live on cheese alone! In a cheese-beverage pairing class (Cheese & Wine or Cheese & Beer for example) four half-glasses will be served during class. In a non-pairing cheese class (Cheeses of France, Cheeses of Italy) two full glasses will be served. We have cheese-friendly wines by the glass available for purchase. Please do not bring your own beverages to class.
You are coming to the best kind of school: one where eating and drinking is required and there is no homework other than continuing to enjoy cheese. Our classroom is set up like a school classroom and we do ask that you give the instructor your full attention when he or she is talking. But it’s fun and relaxed and we want you to ask lots of questions!
Of course! We have an amazing cheese counter and also sell cheese and charcuterie platters to go. If there was a cheese in class you loved, we have it available after class for purchase. If not, your handout will tell you where to purchase it.
We do! We have a supply of vegetable rennet, citric acid, tartaric acid, cheesecloth, and cheesemaking kits and books that we keep in stock. We’ll have them available to purchase after every cheesemaking class. We can also sell them during regular business hours, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 415.346.7530 for more info.
Cakes are shipped via UPS or are available for local pick-up. Cakes shipped via UPS are sent out in two shipments: Perishable, lighter tiers are shipped overnight or 2nd day, depending on the time of year. Less perishable, heavier tiers are sent UPS ground. A signature will be required upon arrival, unless you wave that requirement in writing. We’ll package your cheese carefully to ensure its safe journey, but please refrigerate wheels immediately on arrival. You will receive an email with more shipping information after your purchase.
Please open and check your cheese immediately. If you find the cheese to be damaged let us know upon arrival to replace any wheels in time for your event. All wheels must be refrigerated immediately.

Yes! A cheese knife will work perfectly for you and your sweetheart to cut into one of the top, softer tiers of the cake.
Yes! Cheese is hearty and, in fact, best enjoyed at room temperature. Give your guests plenty of time to take in your gorgeous cake before you cut into it!
